Unit 19-Learning Aim A

 Investigating a documentary on Scriptwriting

Script writing is the process of writing down the movement, actions, expressions, and dialogue of the characters in screenplay format. Writing a novel, a poem, or an essay is a completely different process than writing a script. Specific formatting methods are required to effectively express yourself for the screen.

TASK 1

The role and responsibilities of scriptwriters

Screenwriters create their scripts in such a way that readers can visualise the environment, emotion, and how it will play out on screen. The process of script writing is simple. Firstly, craft a logline, compose a treatment plan, create a cast of characters, outline and plot, rewrite the script and publish

Why scriptwriters have different roles and responsibilities

Screenwriters create and write screenplays for film or television drama. They do so by developing an original idea, adapting an existing storey into a screenplay, or joining an existing project (TV).

Obtaining work as a scriptwriter

Creating great stories often depends on how you present what you have to say rather than what you say. Developing creative writing skills to introduce your protagonist and antagonist in a compelling way; what they want, why they want it, and who stands in their way of getting it. Begin by writing short stories, mini-books, and online articles for businesses that will pay you to write articles for their clients.

Three ways scriptwriters get hired

3 ways that a scriptwriter can get hired:

In House Ideas

Any businesses have their own CEOs who research the industry and decide what would be best based on their earlier success. They occasionally offer suggestions on what would work. These selections may be based on money, yet they hire a creative writer or a team of writers to take their idea to the next level. Writers can be employed in these situations to generate outlines, treatments, and draft.

Apply for Fellowships

A fellowship is a competition that is available in a range of fields, including screenwriting. You submit a sample of your screenplay or other works. The winner is then picked. The fellowships are available at various times throughout the year. They have rigorous criteria.

Pitches

When a writer has a solid relationship with a corporation or is given the opportunity to pitch in a meeting with their representation. The producers may inquire as to what else the writer is working on or has written. This is an excellent time for the author to sell the company on one of their other ideas. Following a successful pitch, they may want a written synopsis. They might re-option that script from the writer.

Media sectors and their screenwriting

Radio:

The script is what makes the noises make sense. It serves as the foundation for your storyline. It highlights the most essential parts and enables your audience in recognizing the significance of the points raised by the people you interviewed. It's not just about the sounds; it's also about the words.

Film:

Screenwriters create their scripts in such a way that readers can visualise the environment, emotion, and how it will play out on screen. They develop and rewrite their script in collaboration with producers, directors, and actors. The script serves as the foundation for the entire production.

Television:

The Television Writer oversees developing all plots, dialogue, characters, and circumstances. The Writer is in charge of creating the tale as well as rewriting and refining scripts. Serialized Dramas Writers can also act as producers and are in charge of the finance as well as the general quality of the production.

Real life case study

Oliver Stone, byname of William Oliver Stone, American film director, screenwriter, and producer known for his ambitious and often controversial movies. He was raised in New York City as the son of a wealthy stockbroker. He attended Yale University for a short time before dropping out to teach English in South Vietnam. Stone returned to Mexico for a year before returning to Yale for a short time. During the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the United States Army. He earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his combat achievements. Stone then attended New York University for film school (B.A., 1971), where he studied under director Martin Scorsese. Stone's war experiences had a profound impact on him, and his student films, such as Last Year in Viet Nam (1971), dealt directly with the consequences of the Vietnam War. Following graduation, he directed the horror films Seizure! (1974) and The Hand (1981), in which Michael Caine starred. Stone also began experimenting with screenwriting, and for Midnight Express (1978), based on the true storey of a man brutally abused while imprisoned for drug smuggling in Turkey, he won an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay. Stone spent much of the early 1980s writing screenplays, including Conan the Barbarian (1982), Scarface (1983), directed by Brian De Palma and starring Al Pacino, and Year of the Dragon (1985). (1985). He returned to directing with Salvador (1986), which he also wrote. In the film, a journalist (played by James Woods) documents the atrocities committed during the 1980–81 El Salvador uprisings. Platoon (1986), for which Stone won another Academy Award, this time for directing, drew on the trauma of the Vietnam War.

Ways script writers develop skills

Producers and managers look for many things in a scriptwriter here are 3

Flexibility, Knowledge, always be Writing

Consistency

When it comes to show business, consistency is everything. As a writer, you will face deadlines and times when you must complete all your tasks. Sometimes you'll be given a lot of time, while other times you'll be given very little. In either case, it is critical to submit work on time. When a deadline is approaching, there are many tricks and tools for organisation and getting past writer's block that you can use. The last thing you want is a reputation for being inconsistent, so practise meeting deadlines now so that when they come up in the future, you are prepared.

Networking

Networking is crucial for screenwriters in particular. It's the most effective way to get a script in front of an agent, studio executive, or producer. Many cities host networking events where screenwriters can meet like-minded artists and people who can help you turn your screenplay into a film. Your script will not sell itself, so get out there and market yourself and your product. It takes time and effort to accumulate all of this. Everyone has the ability to hone their craft and improve their skills. During your college years, you will have the resources and support you need to be the best you can be and excel.

Passion

Having a passion for what you do is important in any profession, but it is especially important for aspiring screenwriters. Screenwriting entails much more than simply writing a script. It entails learning about the art and developing an appreciation for it.

Flexibility:

Being a screenwriter necessitates adaptability in all areas. The writing process, critique, problem solving, and more. Sometimes there will be budget concerns, a change in directors, and a change in studio management, all of which will result in script issues. The goal, however, is always the same: to create high-quality content. You will succeed if you persevere, accept criticism, use your vision, and practise patience. It is critical to have the flexibility to deal with all of this.

Knowledge:

What are your ambitions as a screenwriter? To create a fantastic screenplay! Reading them is an important part of writing a good one. Reading scripts teaches you the language of the writings as well as the various aspects and forms of each one. Try to involve yourself as much as possible in the world of screenwriting. Attend screenwriting workshops and seminars, as well as read books, listen to podcasts, and watch videos. Every piece of information is valuable, and you never know when you might need it.

Always be Writing

You're at a loss for what to do and decide to abandon the project. Many writers struggle with this, and while it is a valid excuse, it does not mean you should give up. No writer ever writes a flawless first draught. They are constantly reconstructing and rewriting stories. Here are some pointers to help you get past this stumbling block: Avoid rewriting the same scene multiple times. You'll never finish if you stay stuck; move on to the next scene and return to the previous one later. Set page targets, such as completing five pages per day. So, the next time you get stuck while writing, don't give up. Remember that the majority of the time, that great screenplay you read began as a terrible first plan.

Film script writer

When pursuing a career in screenwriting, creativity and talent are required. Patience, self-motivation, and an ability to accept criticism are also required. Screenwriters must also understand filmmaking, have creative writing skills, and be fluent in film language. Screenwriters create scripts based on their own ideas or existing ideas or work. Screenwriters are responsible for describing the stories in detail, including physical environments and the moods of the characters, when writing scripts. These scripts are required for use in films and television shows. Screenwriters may create a synopsis and several scenes of a storey prior to the production of a film or television show. After that, a shooting script is written. Camera, lighting, and shot instructions are included in the shooting script.

Game writers

A video game writer does not get to see their spec script turned into a finished product. Project directors develop a concept and collaborate with game designers to create designs and gameplay. The game writer frequently arrives later in the process and performs a much more technical and secondary role than other types of screenwriting. Writing for video games is not the same as writing for film or television. It is more technical and necessitates a thorough understanding of games. It's a field that necessitates a strong interest in the medium. Regardless of the difficulties of breaking in, if you truly have a passion for video game writing, you must be persistent and persevere.

Legal considerations

Legal consideration is the exchange of two or more valuable items in a legally binding contract. The legal issues include copyright, libel and censorship. Writers must properly copyright their work or else another writer will steal their informative content. Writers must also consider restriction, as things like sexual content cannot be shown to a certain extent when composing a film script. Censorship varies depending on a film's rating, so scriptwriters should keep this in mind and ensure the content is appropriate for the audience. Another issue that some screenwriters may encounter is the watershed. Any sex, violence, or other inappropriate content cannot be shown before 9 p.m. When writing a script for a TV show that will air before the watershed, writers must ensure that everything is appropriate for a young audience

Legal consideration-Case study

Alien's release in theatres in 1979 was a watershed moment for the horror genre. Working from Dan O'Bannon's deceptively cerebral screenplay, Scott created a claustrophobic sci-fi thriller that spawned a slew of imitators in the years since. However, according to aspiring screenwriter Jack Hammer, the Alien script was a rip-off of his own work! Hammer attempted to sue O'Bannon after accusing him of plagiarising his screenplay for the unproduced feature Black Space. Fortunately for O'Bannon, he was able to persuade the court that he had written Alien before Hammer did, and the case against him was dismissed.

Ethical considerations

Race, gender, sexuality, and religion all play a role in ethical issues as a writer. Misrepresenting them can be harmful to a writer and tarnish their own name; therefore, when releasing content on a platform, especially one as prestigious as the BBC, we must exercise caution. One of the most recent issues is the misrepresentation of women in the media, particularly in Hollywood, but thanks to feminist movements, more women are becoming strong and independent leading ladies rather than being a doting princess trapped in her castle or just eye candy for the next big action flick.
